As we are both 20-year vegetarians, Jim and I were excited
to welcome activist Barbara Cole to the show today. Barbara is a mom on a
mission.
She spoke in-depth about the policies affecting our
children's health, in regards to meals at school and the need for plant-based
diet.
Barbara's early advocacy on the PTA grew into a CA Statewide
coalition that PASSED - with astounding support - the 2003 "Healthy
Vegetarian School Lunch Act," urging the CA schools to serve daily
plant-based vegetarian school lunches options.
After some time off to focus on family, she founded Lean and
Green Kids in 2009, a non-profit children's health education organization.
Since its founding, Lean and Green Kids programs have reached thousands of
students in the classroom, the cafeteria, and the community. Lean and Green
Kids' advocacy efforts have helped change school food and shape policy at the
local, state, and national level.
Most recently, she has written a big, beautiful children's
nutrition book for the classroom, SuperFoods to Save the Planet.
